The Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development

The Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7) is EU’s main instrument for funding research and innovation in Europe and it will run from 2007 to 2013.

FP7 is built on the continuity of the previous framework programmes, the first of which was launched some 20 years ago, in 1984.

The budget which was earmarked for FP7 was significantly increased (+63% compared to FP6) and is mainly allocated through a mechanism of calls for proposals. A financial support, through subsidies (reimbursement of costs) for instance, is granted to R&D projects initiated by European consortia.

Research centres, universities, SMEs, global companies, or independent participants are eligible to a funding under the Seventh Framework Programme. In particular, SMEs can ask for financial contributions up to 75% of their eligible research costs.
